Council to charge people who dump abandoned cars

Council tax payers in the Borough may no longer have to foot the bill for removing abandoned cars, under Liberal Democrat proposals which were passed in January. The Council will now charge the last registered owners for the removal or storage charges of vehicles abandoned on the highway.

Costs of dealing with abandoned cars

The cost of disposing of abandoned cars is currently £38, but is expected to rise to £100-150 per vehicle when tighter environmental rules come into effect next year.

A number of other authorities already successfully charge owners of abandoned cars. Bracknell Forest Borough Council, the London Borough of Camden and Colchester Town Council receive an average of 30% of their invoices without having to chase the cars' owners further.
