Embarrassing Tory blunder

Recent press coverage relating to the issue of a ticket approximately 10 years ago, which was reported in the Sun newspaper. 10 years ago the Council was under a Conservative administration.

Kingston Conservatives withdrew a question to be asked of the Liberal Democrat administration on Tuesday evening just one hour before the Council meeting started, to avoid embarrassment about their own party’s blunder.

Conservative Cllr Ken Smith informed the Executive Member for Transport in advance that he would ask the question: ‘What was the financial cost incurred by council to appeal against the parking ticket the council recently issued against itself?’

Council officers investigated the claim and informed Cllr Bob Steed that Kingston Council has not recently issued a parking ticket against itself. Instead, Cllr Smith must have been referring to recent press coverage relating to the issue of a ticket approximately 10 years ago, which was reported in the Sun newspaper. 10 years ago the Council was under a Conservative administration.

Cllr Steed commented: “Just like with tonight’s Motion, Kingston Conservatives have forgotten to do their homework. They show themselves up as a lazy opposition, and according to the Sun newspaper’s coverage – an incompetent administration.”

The Sun article was published on Saturday February 20th, titled ‘Councils Ticket Own Cars… Then Sue Selves.'
