Government grant for local fuel poverty campaign

At last night’s meeting of the Executive, Cllr Penny Shelton – Lead Member for Housing announced that Kingston Council has received a £975,000 grant to improve energy efficiency in council properties. The government money signals good news for Kingston Liberal Democrats’ campaign to protect local tenants from fuel poverty this winter.

Cllr Shelton said: “I am pleased to announce some good news for council tenants in Kingston and for the Council’s efforts to improve the energy efficiency of its homes. This is that we have been successful in a bid for funds under the Social Housing Energy Savings Programme, which is part of the Government’s Housing Stimulus Package, announced in the April 2009 budget.

“The grant is a substantial one - £975,000 to carry out insulation works to 1500 properties. Since our current Housing Capital programme is only about £6m per year, this represents a substantial boost.

She added: “The works will improve the Energy Efficiency ratings of the properties concerned and reduce carbon emissions as well as reducing heating bills for residents.”
