Kingston lib Dems condemn Government closure of Kingston courthouse

Kingston Lib Dems have condemned the Government’s decision to shut local Magistrates’ Court as part of a cost-cutting exercise by the Ministry of Justice.

The Government’s decision to close the Magistrates’ Court is frankly outrageous. Kingston has clearly demonstrated the cost effectiveness of our local court, with the building and repair work needed on other courts being substantially greater and more expensive.

Victims, witnesses and defendants – particularly on low incomes – will find it difficult to attend court cases out of the Borough. The Government has gone ahead with this decision without listening to local voices. It is a sad day for Kingston.

Kingston was one of 93 magistrates’ court announced for closure by the Justice Minister Jonathan Djanogly on Tuesday, 14th December 2010. Kingston cases in the future will be divided between courthouses in Richmond, Wimbledon and Battersea.
