Kingston Lib Dems welcome news that Garden Grabbing is to be curbed

Kingston’s Liberal Democrat Administration welcomes the news from the coalition government announcing that gardens will no longer be classified as ‘previously residential land’.

Welcoming the reclassification, Executive Member for Planning and Regeneration, Cllr Simon James said,

“This is great news for Kingston’s residents. Garden grabbing for development has been a real issue for our residents. It is ridiculous that, until now, back gardens were classified as brown field sites in the same way as derelict factories and disused railway sidings. This made it only too easy for some property developers to purchase a row of properties, demolish the homes and then use the gardens to build high density housing against the wishes of the whole community.”

He added: “This is something that the Liberal Democrats have fought for locally and something that we promised to take on in our local manifesto too.”
