This week, following a biased political press statement issued by the Council, a resolute Councillor Liz Green, Leader of the Liberal Democrats said:
“I refuse to say anything detrimental about the Mayor who issued the press release other than he must have been badly advised. He will know there’s an unwritten rule in a council that the civic mayor should remain politically neutral.”
“I personally spoke to the Mayor after the meeting. I apologised and explained that our democratic protest, to remain silent for the latter part of the meeting, was aimed squarely at the Conservative Group and in particular the Leader of the Council.”
“To be clear, the Liberal Democrat Group DID NOT leave their constituents without a voice in the Council Chamber. There were no debates to be had as their legal representatives had rejected our motion."
“The two Labour councillors attending Council did not take part in our protest but did not speak on anything all night.”
Everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly which provides a means for public expression and is one of the foundations of a democratic society.
