New council committees to revitalise local democracy

Tuesday’s meeting of the Executive saw the Lib Dem members agree to give backbencher’s and opposition councillors decision-making powers through three new Strategic Committees.

The proposals will now go to Full Council on 27 April. If agreed, these committees will take over the legal powers of the Executive once parliamentary legislation allows.

Kingston Lib Dems are pleased that the new government have seen sense and allowed councils to choose how their own decisions are made.

Once again we have taken the initiative in Kingston. We want to use this new freedom to involve all elected councillors, both our own and those in opposition, in the decision-making process. We hope that this system will help establish a new politics in Kingston where all councillors, along with the residents they represent, will be fully engaged in making the best decisions for Kingston.
