News Caroline Pidgeon welcome access for disabled people being enforced on buses

Caroline Pidgeon, Liberal Democrat London Assembly Member, commenting on the unanimous Supreme Court ruling stating that bus companies will have to do more to accommodate wheelchair users, commented:

“I very much welcome this ruling.   A policy of simply requesting but not requiring wheelchair space to be allocated to wheelchair users is not acceptable.

“Legal clarity that has now been provided to both bus companies and bus drivers that access to buses for wheelchair users is a right that should be enforced.

“It is now vital that this legal ruling is properly enforced across TfL’s fleet of 9,000 buses.”

“However clear legal guidance on this issue is only part of the solution.  We now need to look at the design of buses and consider whether more wheelchair space is now needed to avoid conflicts arising between wheelchair users and parents with buggies and prams.”
