Back weekly recycling
"Weekly collections are safe with the Lib Dems" - Cllr Liz Green
Weekly rubbish collections are to be improved under a new system to be introduced by Liberal Democrat-run Kingston Council.
The recycling and rubbish plans will see a wide range of material collected from the kerbside each week.
The new contract is based on a successful pilot in Berrylands.
It will be introduced in phases across Kingston Borough from September 2008.
What will be collected weekly?
The following will be collected each week from the kerbside for recycling and composting rather than landfill:
Food – cooked and uncooked (meat too)
Paper
Cardboard
Plastic bottles
Glass bottles and jars
Cans and tins
Textiles and shoes
Directories
Drinks cartons (including Tetra Pak)
Household batteries
What about flats?
For the first time residents of flats will receive a recycling service.
"This will boost our recycling rates and help Kingston avoid Government fines of millions," says the Council’s environment champion, Cllr Liz Green.
No plans to abolish weekly collections
Cllr Liz Green, has reacted angrily to Conservative accusations that weekly collections are to be abolished, accusing them of ‘juvenile scaremongering’.
Cllr Green said, "I am outraged that Conservative councillors are distributing a leaflet claiming weekly collections are to be abolished. Particularly as they support the new scheme - voting for it to go ahead on the council’s scrutiny panel on 3rd April."

Free wheelie bins
"Recycling collections will actually increase from fortnightly to weekly under Lib Dem plans," says Cllr Green, "with free wheelie bins for material that cannot be recycled and needs storing for an extra week. Despite backing the new scheme in the Council, local Conservatives are now saying they want to keep the old expensive and environmentally damaging system as well.
"This would increase the amount we send to landfill, cost taxpayers millions on the contract and in extra landfill charges and cut recycling massively. Once again, the Tories’ lack of action on the environment speaks far louder than their words."
