I have been involved in campaigning locally for the Liberals for more than 40 years. Over the last few years Surbiton has developed as a vibrant place with a good range of restaurants, shops and other facilities. There is a real opportunity as the community plan is developed to preserve what makes Surbiton a good place to live but fit for the future.
I worked on environment and transport policy in central government before retiring in 2006. Shortly afterwards I was elected as a councillor. During the first two years I chaired the Audit Committee and have since been the executive member for the environment, sustainability and climate change. This is a challenging and interesting role as we work towards a more sustainable future for the Borough including introducing more efficient and cleaner energy production, better waste management, enhancing our parks and gardens and improving transport by provision of cycling facilities, buses and highway maintenance.
As a member of the Thames Regional Flood Defence Committee I am keen that there is greater emphasis on reducing the increasing problem of surface water flooding. I have been a governor of Southborough High School for many years. My interests include sport and the arts being a member of Lancashire County Cricket Club and an associate of the Rose Theatre.
