Zero tolerance in Kingston for anti social drinking

To help the Police deal with alcohol related anti social behaviour in Kingston Town centre at night, the Liberal Democrat Council Administration is calling for a new Designated Public Places Order (DPPO.) Subject to public consultation, the Order will make it illegal to continue to drink alcohol after being told not to do so by the Police.

By calling for a Designated Public Places Order, we are showing our support to the Police by giving them greater powers to deal with drinking and crime related to the night time economy.”

We are anxious to allay fears that picnickers and those who drink sensibly in a public place, would be targeted or that a DPPO would resolve all drinking issues in the town.

The Order is not aimed at anyone drinking sensibly in a public place or having a picnic and neither should it be seen as the solution to all street drinking problems.

This decision to consult is about balancing people’s rights to drink sensibly against individuals who are arriving in the town centre already intoxicated carrying bottles and causing anti-social behaviour which can result in violence. We are simply not going to tolerate irresponsible drinking in this way.
