As Kingston makes plans for the number of events happening in the borough for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the first real test for the Borough will be the Road Cycle Test Event (the London Surrey Classic Race) on Sunday 14 August.
All London boroughs are working closely with the Olympic Delivery Authority LOCOG, TfL and Go south Go and Kingston is fighting hard to get the best for residents out of the London Olympics. With 29 teams taking part in the test event including riders who will be participating in the 2012 Games;
Councillor Simon James, Executive Member with special responsibility for Sport said:
“As the London Surrey Classic is the road cycle test event designed to replicate the full Games, the first problem has been the late announcement of the route by LOCOG leaving us with very little time to ensure all our residents and businesses know about the road closures. We have been told that the route will be closed from 6 am until 2 pm on the day of the Race which will see a large portion of North Kingston land-locked and public transport disrupted.”
