New tower blocks across Tolworth will have a massive impact on local residents, after Tory councillors caved in again to developers’ plans.
Last year, Tory councillors ignored the views of residents and approved a planning application on the Tolworth Tower site. This was to build four new tower blocks up to 19 storeys high along Tolworth Broadway.
Following that, plans for yet more multi-storey tower blocks on the Toby Jug site, next to Tolworth roundabout, were initially turned down last year at a public meeting packed with angry residents. The developers then put in an appeal against that decision. Instead of fighting this on behalf of residents, Tory councillors shamefully backed down at a meeting held behind closed doors.
This effectively gave the green light to the plan. There will be no public hearing now. The developer has even submitted a second application for the site proposing an even bigger development. Alexandra Lib Dem campaigner Jackie Davis, said: “This huge overdevelopment will bring Tolworth Broadway and roundabout to a standstill and air pollution will rocket.
Traffic congestion and pollution there is already shocking.” “Lib Dems have argued for new homes on this site for years and stopped multiple attempts by Tesco for a megastore there but we need a sensible number of genuinely affordable homes, not two densely packed sites”.
The Lib Dem position on housing & development
We support more housing, particularly social and genuinely affordable housing - but it has to be sensitive to the local areaand have the infrastructure to go with it.
The current Tory administration, led by a professional planning consultant, is obsessed with overdevelopment, especially of high-end apartment blocks. Millions are spent on these pet projects while essential services are taking second place and face severe cuts.
