Kingston Liberal Democrats are hugely disappointed that the Tolworth Tower planning application was approved last night.
Cllr Liz Green said:
"I believe this is overdevelopment for this site,
- will increase traffic,
- reduce air quality, and
- there was not nearly enough of a contribution for affordable homes.
Unfortunately, as the Tory Councillors for Alexandra ward didn't hand in the petition they collected, all those 400+ signatures of objectors couldn't be taken into account so the developer was able to say that the silent majority supported the application!
It was a split decision of the committee.
All 7 Conservatives Councillors voted for it (some without speaking, others saying we can't do anything about affordable housing as 'that is the rules').
All 4 Lib Dems voting against it, all citing reasons including
- increased traffic,
- lack of affordable housing,
- lack of larger 3 bed units,
- out of character, and
- poor design of tall buildings.
Cllr Liz Green continued
"This does not bode well for the excessive developments due to be decided in next few months. I, for one, don't want to live in a Croydonesque town! We'll need to get even more residents involved if Kingston Borough is to provide new homes in the way most residents want."
